The Indian traditions and views hold that the VEDAS are created by the Almighty God, and are eternal, and ever – lasting. According to Indian literature, at the out-set of this Universe, the God bestowed the knowledge of Vedas to AGNI, VAYU, SURYA and ANGIRA. The sages viewed that Divine knowledge, in the Chants of Vedas. The chants viewed by a particular Sage, were dedicated and named after that Sage. On the basis of ‘MANU – SMRUTI’, ETC., the Sage DAYANAND proved that this Universe was created 1960852976 years before, and hence, the VEDAS also existed before so many years. But the present Historical view, which believes in Evolution, is not ready to accept this Indian perception. A large number of Western Scholars, who have studied Vaidic Literature, accept RIGVEDA as the oldest one, and have attempted to fix the period of its creation. These Scholars are of the opinion that the time of Creation of RIGVEDA, cannot be fixed with certainty, due to the absence of strong and tangible proofs, but, it can definitely be well estimated. It is possible, that this estimation may vary, by a margin of a few centuries. Following the Western Critics, even the Indian Critics, attempted to fix the period of creation of Vedas, and they have fixed the period of creation of RIGVEDA, much older than that estimated by the Western Critics.

OPINION OF MAX MULLER:-

MAX MULLER has attempted to fix the period of composing RIGVEDA, in the Preface of the Books Serial – "Sacred Books of the East", in England. He has stated that RIGVEDA was created in 1200 B.C. In order to support his opinion, he has stated that creation of Vaidic Literature was completed, before the period of GAUTAM BUDDHA. He has divided Vaidic Literature in 4 parts – Chhanda, Mantra, Brahman, Upanishad. The ‘METRES’ (Chhanda) were composed first. Then, ‘MANTRAS’ (chants), and thereafter, ‘BRAMHAN’, and finally, ‘SUTRAS’ were composed. According to MAX MULLER, the period of 200 years, was enough, for the progress and completion of each division. The period of GAUTAM BUDDHA is 500 B.C., and the ‘SUTRAS’ were completed by that time. Hence, the period of their creation, can be taken as 600 B.C. The ‘BRAMHAN GRANTH’ were composed 200 years before ‘SUTRAS’, which comes to 800 B.C. The ‘BRAMHAN’, ‘ARDHYAK’, and ‘UPANISHAD’ volumes, were already composed by that time. The ‘MANTRAS’ were composed 200 years before that, Vedas are divided into 2 parts – ‘Chhanda’ and ‘Mantra’.

The MANTRAS are utilized, in the performance of ‘Sacred Fire’ (Yadnya), and the remaining are ‘METRES’. The creation and progress of Mantras, took place 200 years before that, in 120 B.C. The oldest ‘METRES’ and ‘MANTRAS’ are available in RIGVEDA. Hence, the period of RIGVEDA, can be taken as 1200 B.C. The Scholars like WILSON, KEETH, CALL BROOK, have supported MAX MULLER’s view, regarding the time of creation of RIGVEDA.
