‘Ushas is the Goddess of Rigveda. In one of the hymns Sindhu river is famous in the form of a goddess. In Rigveda Usha (dawn) is famour as the goddess who destroys darkness. (Rigveda 10:75, 2 4 6). Usha and Nakta both the Goddesses are symbols of day and night. Both Goddesses give inspiration to the good deeds present in a human being.

In the mortal world darkness is a symbol of sadness and hopelessness. The dawn destroys darkness and brings happiness, prosperity, inspiration and light in life. When man comes into this mortal world he experiences grief, pain, hopelessness, destruction and gets unhappy because of it. He is coveted to get rid of it. The wait on dawn means like waiting for happiness, inspiration and cheerfulness.

In Indian literature dawn has a great deal of importance. In the first congregation of Rigveda in the hymns it is said that one who worships, praises God at dawn, he becomes radiant like the Agni (Fire). So it is said, Hey Fire, get ignited by the dawn and give us wealth and prosperity. There is one more praise about the dawn. He who gets up at dawn and follows the path of intellectuals is knowledgeable (Rigveda 2/61/1). In praise of dawn it is also said that dawn is involved in the process of making food, it makes the best food, it is good at heat, the best among all, radiant, intelligent, young and living by its rules. Dawn gives the knowledge of gaining immortality. In Rigveda 3/539/61 it is said in the praise of dawn, which is the goddess who destroys darkness, that - Dawn, you fill the whole world with light. You take away darkness with your light, increase your determination and protect it.

The hymns available about the dawn in Rigveda show not only the intellect of the then Sages but also their poetic bend of mind. They try to reduce the burden on their souls by thinking about the beauty of the skies and the mysterious things of the earth and by creating the Vedic Sutras. It is believed that wind, dawn, sun were the inspirations of his poetic mind. The sages got inspired because of their clean and clear behavior by the environmental beauties they saw around them. They applied their deep imagination to the natural happenings going around them and thus they could understand the soul of man; the feelings they were experiencing there. The got deeply involved in the natural happenings like the sunrise and the sunset as they were quite mysterious and quite similar to the experiences with the soul.

The "Usha Sukta" about dawn is the most ancient in Rigveda. The goddess dawn appears in front of the world each and every day. The morning time, which throws light towards all four directions and gives new life, appears in the form of a goddess.

So when the dawn dawns the world and brings with it happiness, inspiration and cheerfulness in the same way when the Yogis meditate they experience inspiration and cheerfulness in their soul. The knowledge of soul is like the dawn. The dawn spreads brightness in this world to remove the inertia caused by the night, in the same way the dawn enters the soul to inspire it, to awaken it and take it on the path of knowledge.

Dawn is praised in the Rigveda in many ways, but mainly in the form of the Goddess taking away darkness. It is also praised as the one who wakes up the one who is sleeping, the well-wisher of mankind, destroyer of the enemies, one who gives wealth etc.

Dawn is considered as the best time for the Yogis to meditate. At this time the connection of mind is the best which is not so at any other day timings. The Yogis mind is stable at dawn. If one practices mediation at dawn all the grief and trouble in his life will vanish just like the darkness is destroyed by the coming of the dawn.
